The Green Paper on Pensions (which the Government published in October 2007) outlined the challenges facing the Irish pensions system in the years ahead, including the sustainability of the system over the longer term in light of demographic change and the adequacy of contribution levels and benefits.

This website has been established by the Department of Social Protection to provide information on the Irish Government's plans for the future of pensions in Ireland. The National Pensions Framework was published on 3 March 2010 and provides the framework for the Government's plan for pension reform. It encompasses all aspects of pensions, from social welfare to private occupational pensions and public sector pension reform. The framework document is available below.

Development of the framework was informed by the range of views raised during the Green Paper consultation process. The Green Paper (published in October 2007) set out the position in relation to social welfare, occupational, personal and public service pensions and posed questions for consideration. An extensive consultation process followed publication of the Green Paper the report of which is available here
